How to Clarify Your Values and Do What Matters Most

Chronic stress brings out the worst in us. When we are overwhelmed with stress, we’re anxious, irritable, frustrated and impatient. We are often cranky and ready to bite someone’s head off.

In today’s stressful world, life is moving so fast. As a consequence, we are not fully present and experiencing our life. Instead of savoring life, we’re just rushing through it.  We’re constantly in a hurry to get to the next task or the next experience.

We end up missing so many precious moments in our own lives. It’s sad to think that 20 years can go by and we might just end up asking, “What happened?”  We’re constantly moving so fast — life ends up being just a blur.

How do you find inner peace and happiness in such a stressful world?

Unfortunately, you can’t avoid stress — it’s part of life. But, you can change how you deal with it. By using effective stress management techniques, you can prevent the damaging effects of stress to your health and to your life.

The most effective stress management system for you will be unique to your own circumstances. It has to be consistent with who you are as a person and what matters most to you. It has to be consistent with your value system.

Your reaction to the demands in your life can be as much a source of stress as the stressful events themselves.  Your inner reaction can magnify or minimize the stress you’re experiencing.

One component of your inner reaction to stress is your value system. Your value system is your sense of what is important in life, your moral system, your sense of purpose and meaning in life. Your reaction to any stressful situation can be influenced by the way you interpret that event and the impact of that event in the context of your value system.

In order for you to manage stress effectively, you need to clarify your values.  You need to think about what matters most to you in the long run. It will require you to understand yourself, what is most important to you and what you hope to do with your life.

How do you clarify your values?

If you’re young, you might ask yourself: What do I want to do with my life? Do I want to have a lot of money, power and fame? Do I want to have inner peace, love and happiness — with enough money for my needs?

If you’re older, you might ask yourself: Did I make the right choices? Am I living the life that I want? Do I want to make changes in my life?

Clarifying your values will help you find meaning in your life and in your daily activities. So that when you face stressful situations, you can see them in a larger context  and you can deal with them with less difficulty. In the grand scheme of things, stressful events can be more tolerable when viewed within the context of what truly matters in your life.

It will take some inner work in order for you to understand yourself more fully. By understanding yourself and your values, you have a greater chance of cultivating acceptance of yourself and honoring your own true being. If you don’t take the time to understand yourself and what truly matters to you, you can end up getting caught up in doing the least important things in your life. You can end up getting caught up in your own fears, anxieties and insecurities — and losing sight of what is most important to you.

By not understanding and honoring your true self and your true value system, you can end up creating a lot of stress and unhappiness in your life. Self-awareness and self-acceptance can help you choose a better path.

Living a life consistent with your true self and your true value system is one of the best ways to reduce your stress and bring more peace and happiness into your life. It can help you stop wasting your time on things that don’t really matter to you. Instead, you can focus your time and energy on what matters most — people and experiences that can bring more peace, passion, love and happiness into your life.

The surprising thing about going through this process of self-awareness and self-acceptance is that it can help you realize that the “secret  to finding your inner peace and happiness” has always been around you — just waiting to be noticed.

It can be a challenge to make changes in your life, but the pay off can be huge. It would be like breathing life into your own life. Instead of dealing with constant stress and chaos, it can transform your life into something full of joy and serenity.
